Changing the gear oil on your Husqvarna or KTM 300cc two stroke dirt bike is a straightforward and inexpensive job you can easily do yourself. No need to spend a bunch of money and have the dealership do it for you. The Husqvarna recommended service interval for this job is 5 hrs for the first change and then every 40 hrs after that. No issue with doing it sooner if you wish.
Tools Required
- Ratchet
- 3 in Extension
- 13mm Socket
- 8mm Socket or T30 Torx
- Drain Pan
- Torque Wrench (unless your hand torque is fine tuned)
Remove Skid Plate (optional)
If you have an aftermarket skid plate installed, that will need to be removed. Given the variety of brands and mounting styles, please follow the manufacturer instructions on how to remove your skid plate.
Warm Up The Engine
If the engine is cold, start the bike and let it run for a few minutes to bring the engine temp up to operating temperature.
Drain The Oil
Locate the oil drain bolt on the left side of the motorcycle, underneath the shift lever. Place an oil drain pan underneath this location to catch the oil. Remove the oil drain bolt with a 13mm socket and the let the oil drain into the pan.

On the right side of the motorcycle, locate the oil fill cap and remove it. With the oil drain bolt and the oil filler cap both removed let the oil completely drain from the bike.

Clean and Reinstall Oil Drain Bolt
The oil drain bolt has a magnet on the end of it to collect any metal shavings. Completely clean the drain bolt and any debris stuck to the magnet.

Clean the surface around the oil drain hole. Also, clean off any oil that has splashed on to the frame while draining.

With the oil drain bolt and drain hole clean, reinstall the drain bolt with a 13mm socket. Tighten to 20 Nm or 14.8 lb-ft.
Fill With Oil
Husqvarna recommends using Motorex 15W/50, but any high quality gear oil will work just fine. This oil change was done with Maxima MTL gear oil. The amount of oil needed is .8l(.8qt) or approximately 26-27oz. Locate the oil fill hole on the right side of the bike and slowly pour in the appropriate amount of oil. Once filled, reinstall the fill cap and hand tighten.

Start The Engine
Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Confirm there is no oil leaking anywhere.
Check The Oil Level
If the engine is warm, let it cool down completely before checking the oil level. The bike needs to be upright and on a level surface. On the right side of the motorcycle, locate the the oil check screw and remove it with an 8mm socket or T30 torx. You want to see some oil run out of this hole.
If some oil runs out of the hole, reinstall the check screw and torque to 8 Nm or 5.9 lb-ft. You are good to go and ready to ride.
If no oil runs out of the hole, remove the oil fill cap and slowly add a small amount of oil until some oil runs out of the check hole. Once achieved reinstall the oil fill cap and hand tighten. Reinstall the check screw and torque to 8 Nm or 5.9 lb-ft. Your are now good to go and ready to ride.
